Green garage doors are insulated overhead doors, manufactured to prevent heat loss by filling the panels with environmentally safe polyurethane or polystyrene. This saves energy and heat loss which can be a major concern when you consider an overhead garage door is usually the largest entrance into your home. R value is a measure of a products insulation so look for doors that have a higher R factor in colder climates and lower if you live in temperate or warmer climate.
Choose double-paned windows to keep winter cold and summer heat out and let natural light in. Make sure that the garage door that you choose has adequate weather stripping along the bottom seal of the door to further insulate against heat loss and keep out rain or melting snow from seeping into your garage. If the door that you choose does not come pre-installed with weather stripping (or you are trying to prevent heat loss on an older model garage door), it can easily be added along the bottom of the garage door at anytime. Fiberglass, wood and vinyl provide some natural insulation but have a far lower R rating.
